St. Thomas Church

Cainhoy, South Carolina. A early afternoon drive to no where, with a dear friend, led us to this step back into time. St. Thomas; other known as, White Church, or Dennis Parish Episcopal Church, was originally constructed in, 1706 but lost in a fire, & rebuilt in, 1819. St. Thomas, was the scene to the 1876 “Cainhoy Massacre". During this time period, the north & south, the black & whites, were going through something called the, reconstruction period. A riot between the, whites and blacks, broke out when some white men traveled to sit in on a meeting being held for, black men of the republican party. The blacks had guns hidden in a secret vault somewhere on the church grounds killing all the unsuspecting white men.

There are at least nine other historical markers with in eight miles of this one, and they are all worth checking out... Brabrant Plantation, Thomas Lynch at Rivertowne, Otranto Indigo Vat, Point Plantation, Brickyard Plantation, just to name a few. The sights and history are rich as well as breathtaking.
